For the elderly people, having clean windows can significantly improve their lives. That’s why we at Custodia are here for them. The Importance of Clean Windows Enhancing Curb Appeal Clean windows make your home look better. They allow in more light thus making your home appear brighter and more inviting. Especially when you want to sell your home or even have some guests coming over this should be given much consideration. Sparkling windows show that your home is well-maintained and attractive. Improving Indoor Air Quality Cleaning windows regularly can improve the indoor air quality. Over time, dirt particles and dust may collect on your windows and sills. Those pollutants are removed when you clean regularly so that the air in your home is cleaner and healthier to inhale. This is even more useful for seniors who are likely to be more affected by poor air quality. Maximising Natural Light Our health needs sunlight. It helps control our mood swings and sleep patterns in addition to increasing our energy levels. Clean windows allow maximum sun rays into your home thereby creating a bright living space. This can be particularly important during the shorter, darker days of winter. Protecting Your Windows Your regular cleaning routines could help prolong the life of your windows. Dirt, as well as other debris, will cause marks eventually. Prevent these problems from occurring by keeping your windows clean which will save you money that would have been spent on replacements or repairs. This is especially important for older windows that may be more vulnerable to damage. Window Cleaning Worth – Health Benefits of Clean Windows Reducing Allergens Allergies can flare up due to dust or pollen accumulating on window sill and window panes. Regularly cleaning your window helps to minimise having allergens at home making it a healthier place for seniors with sensitive respiratory systems. Clean windows for seniors mean less irritants in the air leading better overall health outcomes. Preventing Mould Growth There is an inclination for mold to grow in wet, dirty places. Mold can thrive on windows, especially humid climates. Mold growth can be prevented by cleaning regularly thus ensuring that your health is safeguarded and the home’s structural integrity is maintained. Its control is crucial given that it can lead to various health problems such as respiratory complications. Window Cleaning Worth – Practical Benefits for Seniors Safety First Climbing ladders and reaching high windows are risky activities for most of the elderly people. To clean windows without putting you at risk, professional window cleaning services provided by Custodia ensure that your windows are cleaned safely and thoroughly. We think of cleaning our indoor windows all the time, but do you ever remember to clean the outside windows of your home? Exterior windows outside that are thoroughly cleaned and maintained will improve the property’s look, and can also impact your health and well-being immensely. But, determining when to schedule building window cleaning is not always so simple. When is it time for the cleaning supplies to come out and tackle those outdoor panes? Today, we are going to explain the considerations that go into deciding how often to clean windows outside. First of All, Why Should You Clean Your Windows Outside? There’s quite a few good reasons that you’d want to clean your windows outside other than that you just want them to look nice and shiny. For starters, cleaning the windows on their exterior side can help to give them a longer lifespan. This is because a thorough cleaning will get rid of dirt and gunk that could potentially cause damage over time. On the other hand, having spotless windows will also enable more natural sunlight, which is also good for your mental health, particularly during the colder months or if you live far up North. And maybe even more importantly, dirty windows on the outside of your home can also mean a health hazard. The more the dirt, dust, and allergens accumulate in the interiors, the worse your allergies and respiratory problems will be. Factors Affecting Cleaning Frequency So, we hope we’ve already convinced you of the importance of taking care of the outside of your windows, too. But before you do anything else, consider the different factors that might affect the amount of dirt that might stain your windows: All of these factors will contribute to the frequency of your window cleaning. For example, more dirt or pollen presence, or more trees in a particular area, will mean that you’ll need to clean your windows often. Bad weather, such as raining time or snow falling, can strongly boost the amount of grime your windows accumulate. And the same happens in areas of high pollution or new construction nearby: you may need to clean them more frequently, no matter how careful you are. The list can go on and on: and failure to account for these variables ultimately does not bode well for your windows’ longevity. So, be sure to tweak your cleaning schedule based on where you are and what exactly nature brings to your doorstep. How Often to Clean Residential Windows Outside? Provided you live in a relatively average area in terms of the dirt on the streets, and ambient factors, we recommend cleaning residential windows at least twice a year to keep them looking good and protected for the long-term. However, as we mentioned in the last section, you’ll need to consider things like your local weather conditions, such as high volumes of rain and snow, or high pollen count areas, as these can leave water spots and grime on your windows. How do you clean them when necessary, then? Here’s a simple step by step process you can follow: 1- Gather your supplies To begin the cleanup, you should first gather all the instruments you’ll need. Essentially, this will probably include a bucket, squeegee, and micro-fiber cloth or a piece of newspaper. You’ll also want a mild detergent or window cleaner, and possibly a ladder if you have some high windows. 2- Start with an exterior rinse With the help of a hose or a pressure washer (set to low, of course), you’ll be able to easily remove any loose dirt and rubbish from the outside of your windows. This will make the rest of the process way easier. 3- Mix your cleaning solution Once the exterior of your windows is nice and wet, create a cleaning solution with warm water and a small amount of mild detergent (or window cleaner) in a bucket. Just a small caveat here: do not use hard chemicals because they might damage the glass. Use your own judgment here. 4- Apply the solution all over your windows Start at the top of the window and pull down straight to the complete bottom, preferably by using a squeegee. If you clean them in this direction, you will prevent streaks from forming as well. 5- Squeegee away any remaining liquid Once you have wiped the cleaning solution off the window, use the squeegee to dry the window of any excess liquid. And after every swipe of the squeegee blade, wipe it with a cloth to keep from spreading dirt and debris all over the place. 6- Dry the glass with a lint-free microfiber cloth or newspaper The next step would be to wipe off the excess water with a dry microfiber clean cloth or crumpled newspaper to avoid streaks and get a shiner finish. These are great at absorbing water and leave no lint behind, so they should be your first choice. 7- Clean unreachable places with a ladder If you have windows which are higher up, you might want to invest in a good ladder to be able to reach and clean them safely. Of course, this is the part of the process where things can get tricky quite fast. Try to observe all ladder safety guidelines and even consider getting professional help if you need it. 8- Keep your window frames in mind Don’t forget to clean the window frame, in addition to cleaning the glass pane. Most people completely neglect this part of their window; but over time they can get filthy, so be sure to clean them with the cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. 9- Optional: use a chemical free or natural alternative If you are particular about using natural products or sensitive to chemicals, there are several alternatives to cleaning windows. Common options include vinegar and water, lemon juice, or rubbing alcohol and water. Do My Cleaning Habits Need to Change With the Seasons? As you might imagine, different seasons require…

By Joanne Richard Earth Day is great. Earth Everyday is even better! April 22 is an opportunity to celebrate our planet and commit to making eco-friendly choices in our daily lives. Going green doesn’t have to be daunting or involve a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small changes can lead to a big impact and a cleaner, healthier planet for everyone. Curbing plastic pollution is this year’s theme – billions upon billions of plastic items are choking oceans, clogging landfills, littering landscapes and beaches, reports earthday.org, and gravely harming human health and vital ecosystems. Toxic microplastics are showing up everywhere. We’re inhaling and eating plastics and their chemicals. They’re in our air, soil, food and drinking water. A new study by Columbia University reports that one litre of bottled water (that’s two standard water bottles) contains nearly a quarter-million tiny plastic particles. Consume with a conscious We’re churning out more than a trillion pounds of plastics a year with 14 million tons ending up in our oceans – at that rate, it’s estimated that by 2050, oceans will contain more plastics than fish. Recycling isn’t working! Only 9% of total plastic is recycled, and the process pollutes the air. We need to end mass plastic production, reuse what we have and find eco-friendly alternatives. Do your part by cutting out single-use plastics. Reuse planet-friendly, refillable water bottles and fill with filtered tap water. Bring a travel mug for your daily coffee run. Use cloth bags for groceries. Refuse single-use plastics like cutlery, straws and cups when you can. The planet needs our help so lend a hand. Along with diminishing plastics consumption, there are so many ways to be kind to our planet. Some home changes may require getting someone else to lend you a hand and a home maintenance company can help with that. Together, we can make a difference. Tips For a More Energy-efficient Home on Earth Day Keep things running properly. When you replace outdated appliances, buy energy-efficient models. If a new appliance isn’t in your budget, then be sure to keep things well maintained. Check fridge door seals, empty ice accumulation and keep coils clean. Maintain your HVAC system and keep air ducts clean to keep bills down and everyone breathing easier. Seasonal maintenance also includes replacing furnace filters. Switch out to LED light bulbs. Save energy by turning your thermostat down in the winter when you’re sleeping or out, and same goes for using less AC when no one’s around. A programable thermostat helps with optimal efficiency. Getting professional help to tackle small projects like sealing leaks and adding insulation can save on energy and money. Window coverings are a boon to energy conservation. In total, about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows, and curtains can reduce heat loss by more than 40%. Reduce Your Foodprint Walk or cycle for short distances. Trade your gas-guzzling car for an EV or hybrid model. Having online meetings lessens the carbon footprint. About 24% of Canada’s harmful emissions come from transportation. Reduce your foodprint. Eat less meat and dairy – they contribute bigtime to global warming. Go vegetarian a few times a week. Switch out meat for plant-based proteins like lentils, tofu, chickpeas, and chia and hemp seeds. Also east more seasonal, locally-sourced food. Recycle food scraps. They’re flavourful and good for you, and the environment too. Foods that end up in landfills produce methane, a toxic greenhouse gas. You can easily upcycle food scraps like celery, carrot and radish tops, carrot peels, and asparagus, broccoli and herb trimmings into soups, fruit and veggie peels into chutneys, and pineapple cores, apple, lemon and orange peels into citrusy tea creations. Use stale bread for croutons. Don’t leave the faucet running when brushing your teeth – 42% of us do and it wastes 64 glasses of water each time you brush for two minutes. Fix leaky faucets and install water-reducing shower heads. Use cold water for washing and rinsing your laundry, and dry your clothes on an outdoor clothesline in the warmer months. Maintain Your Yard And Lawn Plant trees, make your gardens pollinator friendly, and maintain your yard and grass to promote ecological balance and healthier lives. Lawn grass helps clean the air, improves soil, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while giving back oxygen, reduces erosion, decreases noise pollution and regulates temperatures. Recycle clippings by mulching and leaving on the lawn to decompose. Declutter responsibly when you spring clean. If you’re getting rid of clothing, old decorations or furniture, don’t add to the landfills. Instead host a garage sale, sell them online or donate them to a non-profit thrift store. Choose refillable, eco-friendly cleaning products for your home on earth day. Some top cleaning sprays get the job done but their harmful chemicals can negatively impact your health and the environment.
