Snow removal may not be the most glamorous task this winter, but it is one of the most crucial. Aside from the comfort of driveways and roads, proper snow management prevents a number of problems that can befall you if you don’t do it. From the very structure of your home to the safety of your family and neighbors, timely snow removal is essential. Plus, if you’re a senior citizen, snow removal is essential for your own safety. But why should you remove the snow around your home? We’ll tell you the many reasons why you should. Whether you do it yourself or seek professional help, snow removal is essential to the care of your home. The Reasons Behind Why Is It Important To Remove Snow? Let’s explore the specific benefits and consequences of timely snow removal, including safety, property protection, and legal responsibilities. Slip and Fall Accident Prevention One of the most obvious reasons to clear snow from the driveway is to prevent slips and falls. Especially if you are an elderly person, having slippery floors can put your health at risk. Slippery, icy surfaces are dangerous and present a significant risk to the well-being of anyone moving on them. As snow accumulates, it hides ice slabs, making it a particular hazard along sidewalks, overpasses and steps. A simple slip can lead to injuries that need professional medical attention, such as sprains, fractured victims or even bruises. So, by clearing snow regularly, you’re also creating a safe walking space and minimizing the risk of slips and falls. In addition, keeping sidewalks accessible also means being a good neighbor. Clearing snow from public furniture on the side of your home helps your neighbors in general stay safe. It’s a small act of kindness that can make a big difference, especially for seniors or people with reduced mobility. Take Care of Your Home’s Structure If you live in Ontario, snow that accumulates from heavy snowfall poses a serious risk to the structural integrity of your home. Large amounts of snow can cause roof damage, ice buildup and other problems that, if not addressed in a timely manner, can involve costly repairs. Snow on the roof means additional weight that can weaken or damage the structure over time. When snow melts and then refreezes, ice dams can form that block proper drainage and cause water to seep under the shingles. That constant water seepage can lead to leaks, mold and structural damage to your home. Raking your roof and removing snow regularly can mitigate such risks and maintain your home. Don’t forget to remove snow from your home’s foundation. Melting snow can cause water to pool around the foundation, creating the risk of cracks and water infiltration. That can jeopardize the stability of your home and lead to costly repairs. Increase Exterior Curb Appeal Your home looks more beautiful with a well-maintained exterior, even during the winter months. After clearing snow from sidewalks, driveways and decks, your home will have a warm, welcoming atmosphere and appear to be maintained despite the cold. First impressions count for a lot, and a clean, snow-free property is definitely welcome in the neighborhood. Whether you’re expecting visitors or enjoying the view, consistent snow removal ensures that your property looks its best at all times. Also, if you plan to sell your home, then the exterior is crucial. Prospective owners often judge a property by the exterior, and a well-maintained winter landscape can leave more than a lasting impression and potentially increase the value of your property. Avoiding Legal Problems Homeowners have a legal responsibility to maintain a safe environment on their property, which also means getting rid of snow as quickly as possible. Because, failing to do so could mean you could face legal problems if someone is injured on your premises due to hazardous conditions. Many local ordinances require property owners to remove snow from public sidewalks within a certain number of hours after a snowfall. Failure to do so will result in fines or citations. In addition, you would be held liable if someone slips and falls on your property due to snow or ice. This incident could result in you being sued and, you could have a financial loss. If you comply with snow removal regulations and keep your surroundings safe, you could save yourself legal trouble and show responsibility and consideration for the welfare of others. Landscape Conservation Landscape elements, such as trees, shrubs and flowerbeds, can be damaged by heavy snow, and repairing or replacing these can be costly once spring arrives. The weight of snow and ice can break branches, crush plants and damage your landscape infrastructure. By carefully removing snow from these areas, you’ll protect your landscaping investment and ensure your yard looks nice and healthy. You can also minimize damage by piling snow in areas that won’t damage gardens. Don’t pile snow in beds or too close to tree trunks, as it may be the weight or moisture that damages the areas. Choose areas where melt water will drain away from plants and bases. Why Seek Professional Snow Removal Services? Safety is one of the most important reasons to hire a snow removal professional. Snow and ice can turn any surface into a slipping hazard, which significantly increases the chance of falls and accidents. Professionals are trained to do a safe job in these conditions. Workers use specialized equipment that allows snow and ice removal to be effective and efficient, which decreases the risk of injury. In addition, professional snow removal crews can apply anti-skid products that will prevent the ground from refreezing, ensuring the property is safe for walking and driving. Snow removal leaves a person’s health in good hands. Removing heavy snow is physically strenuous and, in some cases, can be a risk to a person due to a pre-existing condition or if they are too old to do this type of work. Letting someone with experience do the work is one way to protect…

Speaking of hazards, what are the potential hazards of overgrown maple trees? Potential Hazards of Overgrown Maple Trees 1. Structural Damage Overgrown branches can pose a significant risk to nearby structures. Heavy branches can become excessively heavy and break, potentially damaging roofs, windows, and siding. Branches growing too close to homes can scratch and damage walls and roofs, leading to the costly removal of trees or branches. 2. Safety Risks to People Overgrown maple trees can endanger people, particularly during storms or high winds. Weak or overgrown branches are more likely to break and fall, posing a danger to anyone underneath. Additionally, overgrown trees can block visibility on driveways and walkways, increasing the risk of accidents. 3. Electrical Hazards Maple trees growing near power lines can create serious electrical hazards. Branches coming into contact with power lines can cause outages, affecting entire neighborhoods. Moreover, electrical sparks from branches touching power lines can ignite fires, endangering both property and lives. 4. Increased Pest and Disease Risk Overgrown trees are more susceptible to pests and diseases, which can spread rapidly. Dense foliage provides an ideal environment for pests like aphids, borers, and caterpillars, which can damage the tree and surrounding plants. Overgrown trees with poor air circulation are more prone to fungal infections and other diseases, potentially killing the tree and spreading to others. 5. Reduced Tree Health and Lifespan Neglecting to trim maple trees can compromise their health and longevity. Overgrown branches can compete for nutrients, leading to stunted growth and weaker trees. The weight of excessive branches can cause splits or cracks in the trunk, weakening the tree’s structure and potentially leading to its premature death. 6. Property Value Decline Neglected maple trees can decrease the aesthetic appeal and value of your property. Overgrown trees can make a yard look unkempt and neglected, deterring potential buyers. Potential buyers may see overgrown trees as a future expense for necessary trimming and maintenance, which can lower property appeal. 5 Top Benefits of Timely Trimming for Maple Trees 1. Promotes Healthier Growth Timely trimming of maple trees removes dead or diseased branches, allowing new, healthy growth. It improves air circulation, reducing fungal infections. This helps the tree focus its energy on producing strong, vibrant foliage and maintaining overall health. 2. Enhances Safety Regular trimming prevents branches from becoming heavy and breaking, reducing the risk of injury or property damage. It also keeps branches away from power lines, preventing electrical hazards. Maintaining your trees ensures a safer environment for your family and neighbors. 3. Improves Aesthetic Appeal Trimming helps shape maple trees, giving them a balanced and attractive appearance. Well-maintained trees enhance the beauty of your yard, increasing property value and curb appeal. A neat yard reflects your commitment to proper care and maintenance. 4. Encourages Fruit and Flower Production Trimming allows more sunlight to reach the inner parts of the tree, stimulating the growth of flowers and seeds. Father’s Day falls in June which also happens to be Men’s Health Month. It’s the perfect time to celebrate all the amazing dads out there and encourage them to prioritize their health so they live long, vibrant lives for us all to enjoy together. Spending quality time together doesn’t just strengthen relationships, it also enhances physical, mental and emotional wellbeing for all involved. “Research shows that children with affectionate dads who spend quality time with them are more likely to be engaged in school and go to college, be more social, and exhibit more self-confidence,” reports University of Nevada (UNLV News Center). “They’re also less likely to have issues with substance abuse or encounter legal troubles.” According to Brandon Eddy, a professor and researcher with UNLV’s Couple and Family Therapy Program, dads are spending triple the time with their kids compared to those from previous generations and dads benefit greatly too, especially when it comes to their mental wellbeing. This is often overlooked in the realm of men’s health. Men avoid going to the doctor Eddy’s advice for fathers: Work on and take care of yourself: “It’s really hard to provide aid and support to people when we are struggling ourselves. It’s critical to take the time to attend to your own mental health” – and physical health too. It’s a fact that men tend to put less of a focus on their health than women – they don’t see doctors as often and skip recommended screenings. Actually, two-thirds of men avoid going to the doctors as long as possible, reports a Cleveland Clinic study. That leads to serious health ramifications: Men tend to live more years of their lives with bad health than women, and they have shorter life spans too. One study shows that 72% of men live unhealthy lifestyles, including a poor diet, problem drinking, not exercising or not getting regular sleep. This leaves them vulnerable to a host of chronic conditions and disease than women – they’re 60% more likely to die from heart disease, 40% more likely to die from cancer, 50% more likely to die from diabetes. Prevention is key The good news is that up to 70% of health problems can be avoided with healthier habits, according to the study by the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation (CMHF). The foundation stresses men take charge of their health – get screenings, eat well, exercise, get outdoors and address mental health issues. CMHF offers a Mindfit Tookit and mental health resources for men to manage stress, anxiety and depression. Asking for help and seeking help is not a sign of weakness – it shows inner strength and insight but also equips men to better take on life’s challenges, and be the best dads. Proactive steps for optimal health Encourage dad to take these proactive steps from the experts at McMaster’s Optimal Aging Portal: Independence boosts wellbeing As dad gets older, requirements for optimal health change and for many seniors living in their own homes boosts overall wellbeing. With the proper steps and home management supports, aging in place can be stress-free and reinforce their sense of independence. More and more in-home resources are available including tech products, food delivery options, and home maintenance and yard work assistance, in particular Custodia Home Management, to help older parents age in place safely, comfortably and happily. Focus on one another Meanwhile, family therapist Eddy has advice for dads of all ages to build lasting bonds with their kids:
Raspberries are juicy fruits that burst with flavour to delight our summers. To ensure that these juicy bites continue to capture the summer sunshine year after year, we need to properly care for their source, raspberry bushes. Winters are the ideal time to fulfil this obligation. Winter pruning is essential in raspberry farming as it promotes healthy growth and maximizes the summer’s harvests. It is time we explored the best guide to pruning raspberry bushes in the winter and guaranteeing a bountiful harvest for the next season. Is there any ideal time for pruning your raspberry bushes, it is time you have a sit-down with Raspberry Bush-trimming Professionals here at Custodia to give you the guidance you need in your bush management journey. Understanding Your Raspberry Bushes Raspberry bushes produce fruit on two distinct types of canes: Each cane has a distinct role in the grand scheme of berry production. Floricanes (Fruiting Canes): These canes can be considered the veterans of berry production. These seasoned and mature canes can be easily identified by their woody texture, fruited laterals (short side shoots that bore fruit), and potentially peeling bark. They are usually in their second year of berry production, which means they can be discarded to make room for new and more productive shoots. Primocanes (New Canes): Let us view them as the newcomers. These green, non-woody canes are the current season’s growth and, at most times, are bursting with potential. They usually only bear fruits in the second year. Once the floricanes have finished fruiting, they’ve served their purpose and are ready to be pruned. By understanding this two-cane system, winter pruning becomes a strategic intervention. Retiring these old canes allows raspberry bushes to focus their energy on the primocanes and transform them into the next year’s fruiting machines. Determining if your raspberry bushes should be considered for winter pruning. Not all varieties of raspberries should undergo winter pruning. In most cases, the bushes needing winter pruning are florican bearing, which means their fruit ripens in the summer months. Why should you trim raspberry bushes for the winter? Winter pruning serves a series of purposes in berry production. Maintain the Health of the Bush: Old and diseased canes may be a recipe for infection in raspberry bushes. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the canes to minimize these risks. Pruning also gives less cover to pests, and you can easily point them out and eliminate them. Increase Yield: Removing old or diseased canes gives the bushes renewed vigor. By leaving only the canes with the potential to bear fruit, competition for water and nutrients is significantly reduced. This results in increased yield in the next summer harvest. Air Circulation and Light Penetration: Deliberately removing certain canes provides air and light with a direct path to your plant. For these summer-bearing bushes, more sunlight and unrestricted flow of air allow the plants to dry quickly during the rains. Well-dried plants have little to no exposure to fungal diseases, which keeps them healthy and increases yield. Achieving these benefits requires the input of professionals with the right skills, knowledge and tools for bush trimming. The Winter Home Management Plan by Custodia is equipped with everything you need to have a successful pruning season. Best Time to Trim Raspberry Bushes This is determined by the variety of crops you are cultivating. While different crops are pruned at different times, our focus today is on summer-bearing raspberry plants. The optimal period for pruning these crops is late fall or early winter (Winter pruning). During this period, harvesting is already done, and the product is already in its dormant state. This pruning period is optimal as there is minimum sap loss or stress on the bushes. Summer-bearing raspberry bushes produce crop once each season. With the plants lasting a month after ripening, which is in early June, winter pruning is optimal as it gives the bushes enough time to recover and be ready for the next flowering season. Important Tools for Raspberry Pruning There are a few items you need to consider when preparing for winter pruning. Protective gear: Whether red, black or purple, most raspberry plants are studded and riddled with sharp thorns. The pruning process, therefore, requires you to employ safety mechanisms to protect your body. You need to consider wearing long pants made from durable materials. You also need a long-sleeved shirt, coat or cardigan together with gardening gloves so as to protect your upper body from injuries. Your winter pruning gloves should have gauntlets that protect your wrists and arms from the painful thorns of raspberry bushes. Cutting Tools: Winter pruning entails deliberately removing non-productive branches or canes. Cutting tools are essential to create clean cuts and reduce the risk of infection. Your best tool for snipping through the small lean branches is a pair of pruning shears. For pruning heavier and stronger canes, you need to equip yourself with loppers. These cutting tools are your lifeline in maintaining healthy plants, and as such, they should be disinfected before and after the winter pruning period. Digging Tools: Winter pruning is primarily about branches and canes but may sometimes require digging. Tools such as a spade or fork should be available to dig up any bushes you consider weak and need replacing. Step-by-Step Winter Pruning Guide 1. Removing Floricanes Identify the spent floricanes. Look for the mature canes with signs of fruiting and a woody texture. Using your pruners or loppers, make clean cuts at the base of the cane, where it meets the ground. A clean cut promotes healing and helps prevent disease. 2. Thinning Primocanes (Summer-Fruiting Raspberries) Thinning primocanes encourages better air circulation, light penetration, and, ultimately, stronger canes with a higher fruit yield. Aim for 3-5 healthy primocanes per plant. Choose the sturdiest, thickest canes for future optimal fruiting. Remove unwanted primocanes by cutting them cleanly at ground level. 3. Trimming Primocane Tips (Optional – Summer-Fruiting Raspberries Only) Tipping primocanes in late summer (before winter dormancy) can encourage…

Stay Safe & Healthy During Your Trip When planning your senior summer vacation, you should always focus on your health and safety to have a wonderful time. This is critical, especially in areas with a lot of sun or that are not close to big cities. Luckily, you can prepare for many health concerns by researching the area before you go, talking to your doctor about any necessary vaccinations or medications, and packing a first aid kit just in case. Here are some tips that might help you stay safe during your summer vacations: Staying Connected With Your Family Another great idea when planning your senior summer vacation is to use social media and messaging apps to follow up with your loved ones and tell them about all the things that you are doing while you are away. So, how do you actually do this? There are a couple ways you can stay connected even while not at home. Step one would be simply writing on Facebook or simply posting photos on Instagram, which ensures that your family and friends remain with you in spirit as you document your adventure. If you want to take this a bit further, you can always video call your loved ones to have conversations where they get to enjoy the sights and sounds of your trip instantly over apps like Skype or Zoom. And WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram are best for quick updates and sending pictures. And of course, if you’re a bit more old-fashioned, you can simply call them every once in a while to let them know you’re okay. While not everyone will choose to tap in, it is a nice idea that will help make your vacation even more enjoyable and will bring peace of mind to your family back home. Scams are big business and they’re increasingly targeting seniors, putting them at great risk of losing their assets, their independence and confidence. The lasting trauma of being ripped off can destroy their sense of trust, hope and wellbeing. The shame is overwhelming. “Seniors lost $177 million in 2023 which was an increase from $136.4 million from 2022,” says Jim Horncastle, spokesman for the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) tells Custodia.com. Overall, Canadians lost a staggering $557 million to scams in 2023. The CAFC identifies 30 different types of fraud, and the overall reported loss for the first three months of this year is $123 million. From love and financial scams to fake price and home repair fraud, research reports that seniors (60+) are 33% more likely to get conned by fraudsters compared to other age groups. In particular, the emergency grandparent scam is swindling seniors out of millions. Imagine being home alone and you get a call saying your grandson is in jail! The caller posing as a police officer demands $9,000 cash in bail money, and says not to tell anyone about it. Grandparent scams target older adults That very scenario sent Diane Lindsay of Ingersoll, Ont. into a complete panic; she immediately called her husband Ron who was curling at the time, to go and get the money. “She was told that our grandson was in an accident and drugs were found in the car. The caller knew our names, knew we had a grandson, and claimed to let her speak to him,” Ron, 83, tells Custodia.com. Ron suspected a scam from the start and drove to his daughter’s house where he found his grandson safe and healthy. The fraudsters brazenly called back a few more times, irate and demanding the money; Ron reported the scam attempts to the police and Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The Lindsays are lucky – many seniors fall victim to this scam and others. Recently the OPP put out a warning for Canadians to be vigilant after a senior with dementia lost $600,000 through repeated grandparent scams. She couldn’t remember the situation from the day before. “Do not react to what they say. Tell them you will handle it by calling authorities and hang up,” says Ron. “They’re aggressive and very experienced and have the answers to all your questions.” Swindled out of $75,000 for roof repairs not needed Be leery of all high-pressure pressure tactics and unsolicited offers on the phone, online and shady solicitors coming to your door pitching home renovations. “Better you contact businesses when you need something done,” he adds. Never sign anything on the spot! Beware the friendly fraudster at your door that appears to be knowledgeable and can give you a one time-special price to fix your roof, fence or driveway. They put on the pressure to sign a contract or give a big deposit and do little, poor or no work at all. Toronto retirees Judy Poirier and Robin Rushton ended up getting scammed out of $75,000 by a man who offered to cap their chimney. That $800 fee grew to $62,000 when the workers claimed extensive roof damage requiring structural repairs. The reno quote steadily climbed to beyond $100,000. Apparently, the roof was falling down. They were terrified: “He used the words that there was damp wood, rotting wood, broken wood, mould. The roof was going to collapse. It was dangerous. Winter is coming,” Judy told cbc.ca. The truth is all the roof could have used were new shingles, at a cost of around $8,500. Landlines increase vulnerability to fraud The money paid in bank drafts is gone. “I’m an emotional wreck … I can’t tell you how terrible it is,” Judy told cbc.ca. “I don’t know how, if, we’ll ever be able to build our savings up again.” It’s easy to fall victim to people who impersonate government agencies, grandchildren or other pushy people who quickly elicit trust, including investment, romance and service scammers. And fraudsters are only getting smarter and more sophisticated and employing artificial intelligence and QR Code fraud to steal. According to Horncastle, vulnerabilities in digital platforms are being exploited with “criminals commonly using caller id spoofing, search engine optimization, fraudulent online and social media ads or compromised accounts.” Having a landline makes older homeowners an added prime target. Going on websites like Canada 411 offers loads of information like someone’s phone number, name and address. Scammers search obits and social media for names of grandchildren or relatives which they employ to manipulate seniors. Don’t fall for high-pressure tactics Horncastle reports that victims are being contacted through ads on social media, telemarketing calls or through door-to-door sales persons. Ads on social media will ask for your contact information, and then after sharing, you’ll receive a call to set up an appointment at your home. “Door-to-door sales people can use high pressure tactics and can be aggressive in nature. Consumers may find themselves in a situation where they purchase a product or sign up for a service they neither need nor want,” says Horncastle, and that may come with contractual obligations. “They may claim that the victim is eligible for a grant through a government program and pressure the victim into signing a contract or prepaying for the equipment or services.” Common home service scams include: Scammed home owners end up with work or equipment that is often not worth the price paid, and in some cases that warranties are invalid, he says. “The CAFC has also received reports where victims have signed a contract and a Notice of Security Interest (NOSI) has been placed on their home.” Scammers impersonate legitimate companies Scammers are predatory! “Whether you are getting a phone call, email or social media message always confirm the identity of the person by a different method of communication,” advises Horncastle. For example, look up the official phone number for the company, agency or person and make an outgoing phone call. Fraudsters will often use the name of legitimate companies in order…

Listen to your mother. Flowers are thoughtful and so are chocolates but what she would really like for Mother’s Day is a gift-wrapped box of relaxation along with some quality family time, minus the planning, cooking and clean up. A day with no demands, distractions or having to organize a thing – or having to fight everyone’s phones for attention. Just take her along for the ride and make wonderful memories together. But first let her sleep in. Most of us won’t listen as mom swears she doesn’t need a thing but truly this special woman deserves the world – and to be celebrated on Mother’s Day and every day of the year. She’s your best friend, your biggest fan, and greatest supporter. Moms Are A Busy Bunch Moms go hard all year nurturing, nudging, listening, loving and cheering us on, While it’s the greatest job in the world, evidently it’s the toughest too with long hours and a never-ending to-do list. According to one study, moms work the equivalent of 2 ½ full time jobs! Basically, 98 hours a week! What other job requires a 14-hour working day, seven days a week? So it’s not surprise that topping their wish list, according to research, is restorative family time and throw in a few hours of blissful, uninterrupted selfcare to reset and recharge her batteries, aka reading, napping, some Netflix binging, a peaceful walk. Moms are a busy bunch and it’s not only moms with young kids that go hard – moms with children of all ages, including adult children, are busier than ever, working, volunteering, running households and helping with grandkids so parents can work.
